On Mission

GORDON BAPTIST CHURCH

Living in Jesus is living a new life. We come to a person; we go with a purpose. Everyone called to Christ and his kingdom is called to partner with him and others On Mission.

But how do we do that well today?

This month focuses on learning and doing this essential activity, navigating its opportunities and challenges, and exploring topical aspects of living On Mission. Below you'll find:

  • projects that we are supporting, with links to give,

  • a learning plan with links to group materials,

  • global partners that we will be hearing from throughout this series, and

  • a link to register to attend our movie night: "Song of the Wilderness"

OUR PROJECTS

Partnership includes giving, investing in the work of others who partner with us.  In addition to our normal annual budget, this month we will support:

Cambodia: Developing Church planters and youth rehabilitation

In January 2023 our own Pip, Pern and their children Levi and Pia will head back to Cambodia for a year. This will be their first time to live in Cambodia as a family, sent by us and Baptist Mission Australia.

Pip lived in Cambodia for nine years, up until 2014, and is fluent in Khmer. She will focus on selecting and developing local leaders for church planting in North-West Cambodia. Pern will develop relationships with the staff and clients at a government-run drug rehabilitation centre. He will also explore training, employment, sports and recreation opportunities for young people who are being released from the drug rehab centre. Levi will continue schooling via Distance Education while Pia will be enrolled part-time in Pre-School.

Together, the family will continue to learn culture and language, re-connect with family and friends, and seek to encourage extended family members who have come to faith in recent years.

Pern, Pip and their family are supported volunteers. (This means that they will need to raise their own financial and prayer support for living and working in Cambodia next year.) Our donations will assist them in this.

Our giving target for this project is $10000.

Australia: Serving First Nations people in NSW (not tax-deductible)

Aboriginal Australians are part of the oldest continuing culture in the world, and the original custodians of God’s creation where we now live. Their leaders (past and present) are amongst the most Christlike in the Australian church. Yet they continue to face considerable disadvantage. As a Baptist Mission Australia candidate, Daniel Sze has a passion for wholistic ministry, serving the spiritual, physical and educational needs of Indigenous families and individuals, beginning in urban settings. He will explore new modes of ministry including church planting, education and capacity building with current Aboriginal Christian leaders in NSW.

Born in Hong Kong, Daniel brings many years of research experience and teaching across several scientific and medical fields including pathology and immunology. Daniel earned PhDs from Birmingham (UK) and Sydney University (AU) alongside his expertise in Indigenous Medicines. In 2020 he began theological training at Morling College as he discerned God’s prompting toward Gospel ministry among Indigenous Australians.

In order to engage with communities he will need to travel by vehicle and plane to various regions of NSW. Our giving will support Daniel’s tangible travel costs including petrol, car maintenance, flights and accommodation.

Cambodia: Community Development & Covid Recovery via BWAA (tax-deductible)

COVID-19 has put additional pressures on already vulnerable communities in Cambodia: children have missed months of education because of school closures and limited technology access; families have lost important streams of income; community groups and churches are limited in meeting face to face; feelings of anxiety have spread.

Our support can help communities regain their feet by providing basic health-care items like masks and soap which keep people safe; promote COVID-19 awareness messages and education. It will help children return to school and complete their education so they can pursue their dreams. It will provide job skills training so communities can be more resilient.

Baptist World Aid Australia works with local organisations and churches to meet people’s needs where they are to see God’s kingdom demonstrated and proclaimed.  This is love in action.
