Mission Invisible

Have you ever missed something right in front of you? Overlooked an opportunity or failed to notice someone in need?

Our God isn't visible to our eyes, but we can see his work in the world if we take the time to look. Every day, God is active in his mission across the world. Yet often we miss it—along with his invitation for us to join in, whether in ways big or small, seen or unseen.

This is our Mission Invisible. Not impossible—just requiring better vision! We need to see opportunities hidden in plain sight. To notice people and needs that others overlook. To bring light and hope into lives and communities as God works through us, making all things new.

In this series, we'll help each other open our eyes to God's work and the changing landscape of mission happening right before us. We'll discover the circumstances of hidden people and explore how we might respond. We'll learn new approaches and witness new life emerging.

As the prophet directs us:

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old.  Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

— Isaiah 43:18-19

Life Group Discussion Starters

  • Discussion starters:

Read Acts 1:1-8 about Jesus’ promise before his ascension, (and/or Acts 2:1–42 for the account of what happened at Pentecost).

    1. How does receiving the Holy Spirit empower followers of Jesus to be witnesses to Jesus in their/our everyday lives?

    2. What has your experience of the Holy Spirit been like so far — if any?

    3. How do physical or emotional experiences of the Holy Spirit shape our relationship with God, compared to simply understanding the Spirit intellectually?

    4. How can we grow in discernment to know when an experience of the Spirit is truly from God?

    5. Would you like to receive of God’s Spirit? What might it look like to ask for God’s Spirit together now?

  • Discussion starters:

    Read John 9.

    1. How do you think this man felt about life, God, and his community?

    2. Compare how the disciples acted and spoke about him with how Jesus responded to him. What do you notice?

    3. What motivates people to label or blame others for their struggles or circumstances, or to pass them by as invisible?

    4. Who gets treated this way today?

    5. What does it look like for the kingdom of God to come for this man, and what does that suggest about how the work of the kingdom is to be done in mission now?

    6. What might make it hard for each of us to live in mission this way today, and how do we help one another keep expanding our vision?

  • Discussion starters:

    Read Psalm 96:1-6.

    1. It's often been said that music is a universal language. Do you agree/disagree? Why?

    2. Can you share a song/piece of music that is meaningful to you? How has it made a difference in your life? (It can be any song/piece of music)

    3. How do you think you can use music as a bridge to connect with your non-Christian friends and share about your faith?

    4. Can you think of someone you know who could use some encouragement these days? Is there a song about God that you could recommend to them that would be of comfort to them?

    5. Spend some time to pray for the people you shared about.

  • Discussion starters

    1. In what ways have you experienced challenges or setbacks when stepping out in faith or supporting missions? To what degree do you understand these as 'spiritual attacks', or simply as common difficulties? How can we stay prepared for setbacks in our involvement in mission?

    2. Paul lays out a clear sequence in Romans 10:1-15: How can people believe unless they hear, and how can they hear unless someone is sent... Where do you see yourself in this "salvation spiral" - being sent, preaching, praying, supporting, or maybe hearing for the first time?

    3. The missionary work in the Highlands and the slums of Bangkok involved crossing cultural and social boundaries. What challenges or surprises do you think Christians might face when sharing the gospel in places very different from their own? How can we share Christ respectfully and effectively in such contexts?

    4. Some believers have given up comfort, career, and stability to serve in remote or poor areas. How does this challenge our own views of success, sacrifice, and what it means to live for God’s Kingdom?

  • Discussion starters:

    Read Acts 10 together.

    1. In what ways is God's mission always the same, and always changing?

    2. Have you ever had an experience where someone from a different background or culture helped you see God in a new way?

    3. What are some ways churches need to adapt today to join in what God is doing? Are there old ways we need to let go of so that love can grow wider?

    4. In our world, what are the labels or barriers that make people feel excluded from God’s love? How can we help remove them?

    5. What does it practically mean to be sustained by Jesus as you join him in his mission today – especially if it stretches you or takes you somewhere unexpected?
